A classification of research types is formulated for the specialty degree project of specialization programs in business administration and management, based on its purpose, type of research problem, action verbs, and their basic approaches, considering Venezuelan legal regulations about graduate programs. This classification proposes the following research types for degree projects: evaluation research, research and development and action-research. Examples and comparative arguments for using this classification are provided. As a second objective the organization of the research report (phases and outline) is described, and finally the third objective, is a proposition to extend the application of a model for research management to the graduate programs in this discipline, offering suggestions to help graduate program coordinators to use it for developing program performance indicators. The current status of the use of the terms «management», «administration» and their synonymous are discussed in order to support the proposed classification.

It is expected that this proposal will contribute to help students and tutors regarding the selection of topics and research types to be used in their degree projects as well as graduate program coordinators while managing ongoing research in their graduate programs.
